How long does caffeine actually stay in your system?
A straightforward answer, plus why the six hour half-life number you have seen everywhere does not tell the whole story.
The short answer
Caffeine has an average half-life of about 5 to 6 hours in healthy adults. That means half of what you drank is still in your system 5 to 6 hours later, and it takes roughly 10 to 12 hours for your body to clear it down to a small residual amount.
Why "average" is doing a lot of work in that sentence
That range is a population average, not a personal one. Measured half-lives in studies range from as short as 2 hours to as long as 10, depending on the person. A few things move that number a lot:
- Genetics. CYP1A2 gene variants can roughly double or halve your clearance speed.
- Pregnancy, which can extend half-life to 15 hours or more in the third trimester.
- Hormonal birth control, which can roughly double half-life.
- Smoking, which tends to speed clearance up.
- Liver function and certain medications.
Two people can drink the same coffee at the same time and be in completely different places by 10pm.
What this actually means for you
If you are using a fixed number, something like "caffeine takes 6 hours to leave my system," to plan your last coffee of the day, you are applying someone else's biology to your own schedule. That is fine if you happen to be close to average. It is a problem if you are not, and most people do not know which one they are.

How to find your actual number
Short of a genetic test, the most practical way is to work backward from how you actually feel and sleep relative to when you drank caffeine, tracked over time rather than guessed at after one bad night.
